MP3 Compatible
Last year, only the KD-SH99 played MP3s. This year, the KD-SH707 and KD-SH909
play mp3s. From what I've read in reviews online, the JVC is one of the best
MP3 compatible decks for the price. The reviews I read claimed seek times (the
time taken for the deck to seek to a new song) of approximatly 2 seconds, and my
experience has confirmed this. With 192 kbit MP3s, it's indistinguishable from
CD, according to Chris, a vinyl junky.
iEQ (7-band)
The KD-SH77 had a 3-band EQ with rather confusing settings. For each of the 3
bands, you set a mid-frequency from a choice of 2 or 3, then you set the width,
ranging from 1 to 4, depending on the band, then you set the acctual level.
While this did give a lot more flexibility versus just setting the level, it was
rather confusing to work with. In the KD-SH909, it's a plain old 7-band EQ,
where you simply set the level on each band. I definatly prefer this new
one.
Dot-Matrix
The LCD on the KD-SH77 had a single line of dot-matrix display, for displaying
arbitrary text. This was sufficient for the KD-SH77, but with the introduction
of MP3 capability in the KD-SH909, two lines of text were needed for displaying
MP3 tag information. What this means is that the dot-matrix portion of the LCD
is now twice the size, and JVC makes use of it quite well.
